Thomas More Falls to Two Nationally Ranked Opponents at Calvin Invite

(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) – The Thomas More College volleyball team dropped two matches today (Saturday, September 5, 2015) during the second day of the Calvin College Labor Day Weekend Invitational at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The Saints fell, 3-1, to No. 23-ranked Pacific Lutheran and, 3-0, to No. 1-ranked Calvin.

With the losses, the Saints fall to 1-3.

Pacific Lutheran defeated the Saints in the first match of the day by the scores of 25-22, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-19.  Senior outside hitter Stacy Howell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este) led the offense with 16 kills, while senior middle hitter Jessica Knaley (Florence, Ky./St. Henry) finished with nine kills.  Sophomore setter Jenna Fessler (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) led the team in assists with 44.

Two Saints had double-digit digs in the match as sophomore defensive specialist Rachel Bronner (Reading, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) had 21 and Howell added 13.

In the final match of the day, Thomas More fell to the top-ranked Knights by the scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-14.  Fessler paced the offense with 14 assists, while junior outside hitter Marisa Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) led the team in kills with seven.  Bronner led the Saints' defense with eight digs.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Fessler was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Saints return to action next Saturday (September 12) when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tri-match.  Thomas More will play host Chatham University at 11 a.m. and Grove City College at 1 p.m.
