Box Score 2 (CINCINNATI, Ohio) – The Thomas More College volleyball team earned a pair of wins today (Saturday, September 6, 2014) on the final day of the Charlie Wrublewski Tournament hosted by Mount St. Joseph University at the Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Saints defeated Westminster (Mo.) College, 3-0, and Heidelberg University, 3-2.
With the sweep, the Saints improve to 6-1 on the season.
Thomas More defeated Westminster in the first match of the day by the scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-23. Junior outside hitter Stacy Howell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este) led the Saints with seven kills, while sophomore middle hitter Alexis Bierbaum (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) added six. Freshman setter Jenna Fessler (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) paced the offense with 20 assists.
Senior defensive specialist Kelsey Castiglioni (Harrison Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) led the defense with five digs, while senior defensive specialist Christina Newport-Brackett) finished with three digs.
The Saints defeated Heidelberg in the second match of the day by the scores of 25-11, 21-25, 16-25, 25-23 and 15-11. Fessler had a double-double in the match as she had 61 assists and 20 digs. Three Saints finished with double-digit kills as Howell had 25, senior right side Holly Bronner (Reading, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) had 16 and junior middle hitter Jessica Knaley (Florence, Ky./St. Henry) had 13, while also leading team in service aces with three.
Castiglioni led team in digs with 33, while Newport-Brackett finished with 24.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Castiglioni and Fessler were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (September 10) when it hosts Hanover College in its home opener. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
