Box Score 3 (BETHANY, W.Va.) – The Thomas More College volleyball team swept three matches today (Saturday, September 13, 2014) as it defeated Chatham University, Bethany College and Carnegie Mellon University all 3-0 in a quad match at Hummel Field House in Bethany, West Virginia.
With the sweep, the Saints improve to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the PAC.
In the first match of the day, Thomas More defeated Chatham by the scores of 25-3, 25-11 and 25-6. The Saints offense was led by freshman middle hitter Kristen Jansen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) with seven kills, while sophomore outside hitter Marisa Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and freshman outside hitter Kelsea Schloemer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) each added six kills. Sophomore setter Nicci Stemler (North Bend, Ohio/Seton) paced the offense with 27 assists, while Meyer had 10 service aces. Senior defensive specialist Kelsey Castiglioni (Harrison Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) led the defense with eight digs.
Thomas More defeated Bethany in the second match by the scores of 26-24, 25-22 and 25-20. Two Saints had double-digit kills as junior outside hitter Stacy Howell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este) had 15 and junior middle hitter Jessica Knaley (Florence, Ky./St. Henry) had 13 kills, while also recording three service aces. Freshman setter Jenna Fessler (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) led the team in assists with 38. Castiglioni led the team in digs with 16, while senior outside hitter Holly Bronner (Reading, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) added 13.
The Saints closed out the quad match by defeating Carnegie Mellon by the scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-21. Fessler paced the offense with 34 assists. Howell led the team in kills with 16, while senior right side Felicity Britt (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) had 13. Defensively, Castiglioni had 15 digs, Fessler had eight digs and sophomore middle hitter Alexis Bierbaum (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) had three total blocks.
Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (September 17) when it hosts Bluffton University at 7 p.m. inside the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
