Box Score 2 (ADA, Ohio) - The Thomas More College volleyball team swept two matches today (Saturday, August 30, 2014) on the second and final day of the Ohio Northern University Invitational at the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio. The Saints defeated Defiance College and Thiel College by identical scores of 3-0.
With the sweep, the Saints improve to 3-1 on the season.
In the first match of the day, Thomas More defeated Defiance by the scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-18. The Saints' offense was paced by freshman setter Jenna Fessler (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) with 38 assists. Junior outside hitter Stacy Howell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este) led the attack with 14 kills, while junior middle hitter Jessica Knaley (Florence, Ky./St. Henry) and sophomore outside hitter Marisa Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) each added nine kills.
Three Saints had double-digit digs as senior defensive specialist Kelsey Castiglioni (Harrison Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) had 25, senior defensive specialist Christina Newport-Brackett (Louisville, Ky./Seneca) had 11 and sophomore defensive specialist Sydney Bragg (Huron, Ohio/Huron) had 10.
In the second match of the day, the Saints defeated Thiel 25-10, 26-24 and 26-24. Sophomore outside hitter Alexis Bierbaum (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) led the team in kills with eight, while Meyer and sophomore right side Paige Noday (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) finished with six kills each. Fessler led the team in assist with 36.
Castiglioni led the Saints' defense with 28 digs.
Thomas More returns to action next Friday (September 5) when it plays across-the-river rival Mount St. Joseph University in its Charlie Wrublewski Tournament at 5 p.m. inside the Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
