Box Score 2 (ADA, Ohio) - The Thomas More College volleyball team went 1-1 tonight (Friday, August 29, 2014) on the first day of the Ohio Northern University Invitational at the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio. The Saints defeated The College of Wooster, 3-0, but fell, 3-1, to Ohio Northern in the second match.
The Saints are now 1-1 on the season.
Thomas More defeated Wooster in the first match of the day by the scores of 25-18, 25-9 and 25-17. The Saints attack was led by junior middle hitter Jessica Knaley (Florence, Ky./St. Henry) an junior outside hitter Stacy Howell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este), who each had eight kills in the match. Freshman middle hitter Kristen Jansen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) finished the match with seven kills. Freshman setter Jenna Fessler (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) led the team in assists with 32, while senior defensive specialist Kelsey Castiglioni (Harrison Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse) led the team in service aces with four.
Castiglioni led the defense with 14 digs, while senior outsider hitte Holly Bronner (Reading, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) added seven digs.
In the second match of the day, Ohio Northern defeated Thomas More by the scores of 25-20, 25-27, 25-18 and 25-19. Knaley led the team with 11 kills and three service aces. Howell added nine kills, while senior right side Felicity Britt (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) and sophomore outside hitter Marisa Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) each finished with seven kills. Fessler led the team in assists with 41, while Castiglioni led the team defensively with 30 digs.
Thomas More closes out the ONU Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, August 30) when it plays Defiance College at 12 p.m. and Thiel College at 2 p.m.
