(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - Sophomore guard/forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) recorded her third straight double-double today (Saturday, November 23, 2013) as the eighth-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team defeated Capital University, 85-68, in a non-conference game at The Capital Center in Columbus, Ohio.
With the win, the Saints remain undefeated at 3-0 and with the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-2.
Capital took an early 4-2 lead when Jamie Caton made a jumper with 18:29 to play in the first half. The Saints used a 14-6 run capped by a Moss lay-up with 10:41 to play in the opening half. Capital tied the game at 16-16 when Monica Heckman made a jumper with 8:46 to play in the half to cap a 6-0 run. Thomas More closed out the half on a 24-8 run to take a 40-24 halftime lead when junior guard Sydni Wainscott (Erlanger, Ky./Simon Kenton) made two free-throws with 17-seconds to play in the first half.
Thomas More opened the second half on a 15-8 run to extend the lead to 55-32 with 16:00 to play in the game when senior guard Devin Beasley (Burlington, Ky./Conner) made a three-pointer. The Crusaders responded with an 8-4 run capped by a Jenna Erwin three-pointer with 13:37 to play in the game to cut the lead to 59-40. The Saints answered with a 13-5 run capped by a free-throw by freshman guard Kelly McDonald (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) with 8:58 to play in the game to take their biggest lead of the game at 72-47. Capital closed the game on a 21-13 run, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More won the game, 85-68.
Moss completed her double-double with a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds. Junior forward Jenny Burgoyne (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) also finished with a double-double as she had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Wainscott joined them in double-figure scoring with 15 points. Beasley led the team in assists with five, while Wainscott and Beasley led the team in steals with two each.
Thomas More is idle until next Saturday (November 30) when it hosts North Park University on the first day of the 12th Annual Julie Costello Memorial Classic presented by Barleycorn's. The Saints and Vikings will tip-off at 4 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
