Mahoney graduated from Campbellsville University in 2021 with his undergraduate degree in Business Administration and in 2022 with his MBA. 

Mahoney is in his first year of coaching. 

Over his 5 years at Campbellsville, he was named First Team All Mid-South Conference in 2021-22 and Second Team All Mid-South Conference in 2020-21. Mahoney had 2 career wins as a Tiger. He has a top-five career scoring average in Campbellsville's program history (75.55). He tied Campbellsville's record of career eagles with 10.

He was a member of the Tigers Mid-South Conference Championship Team in 2021. That team finished 5th at the NAIA National Championship and achieved the highest ranking in program history at 6th in the nation. Austin finished tied for 22nd at the NAIA National Championships individually in 2021. He was also named Academic All Mid-South Conference four times and an NAIA Scholar-Athlete two times.
