#16 Thomas More Wins ACAA Championship With 10-2 Win over Alfred State

(ALFRED, N.Y.) – The 16th-ranked Thomas More University softball team won the American Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Championship Tournament today (Sunday, May 5, 2019) as it defeated third-seeded Alfred State College, 10-2, in five innings in the championship game at Harrington Field in Alfred, New York.  The Saints improve to 32-9 and the Pioneers fall to 9-18.

  • Alfred State plated two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Thomas More tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first as junior catcher Kenzi Dickerson (Union, Ky./Ryle) had a two-run double scoring senior pitcher Alix DeDreu (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) and senior third baseman Whitney Quillen (Dayton, Ky./Highlands).
  • The Saints took a 3-2 lead in second on RBI single by DeDreu, scoring junior second baseman Sydney Turner (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison).
  • In the fourth inning, DeDreu had a two-run double bringing Turner and Quillen home to extend the lead to 5-2.
  • Thomas More closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth as Dickerson had a RBI single scoring first-year shortstop Lindsey Meier (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy), first-year pinch runner Taylor Peters (Wilder, Ky./Campbell County) scored on a RBI double by first-year designated player Elena Harrison (Mason, Ohio/Mason), senior left fielder Morgan Wells (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) scored on a RBI ground out by junior right fielder Amanda Lloyd (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart), Quillen had a RBI single scoring first-year center fielder Baylee Hobeika (Colerain, Ohio/Colerain) and Quillen scored on a RBI double by DeDreu for the final score of 10-2.

  • DeDreu led the team at the plate as she was three-for-four with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored.
  • Dickerson was two-for-three with a double and three RBI.
  • Quillen was two-for-three with one RBI and three runs scored.
  • Turner was two-for-three with two runs scored.

  • DeDreu earned the win as she pitched five innings giving up two runs (both earned) on three hits and struck out six.

  • This is the third-straight conference title as the Saints won the previous two championships in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) before leaving that conference in July 2018
  • Thomas More has won eight conference titles since 2007 and seven under 11-year head coach Lindsay Eagan. 
  • The Saints were ranked No. 16 in this week's NFCA Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the NCAA Division III's Central Region rankings.
  • DeDreu was named the Most Valuable Player of the ACAA Tournament.
  • Quillen, Wells and Dickerson joined DeDreu on the All-Tournament team.

  • The ACAA does not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship and the Saints must earn an at-large bid to the tournament.
  • The NCAA will announce the tournament field and the brackets for the championship tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a selection show on
