(CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY.) — Thomas More University President Dr. Joseph L. Chillo, Athletic Director Terry Connor, and men's basketball Head Coach Justin Ray announced today (Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019) that Spencer Berlekamp will join the Saints coaching staff as Assistant Coach.
"We're excited to add Coach Berlekamp to the staff as we make this move to the scholarship level," said Ray. "His passion and knowledge of the game are a big addition to our program. He's a Cincy native and a recent former high school coach in Cincinnati as well as a player here at Thomas More, so he's developed deep recruiting ties in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area, which is important if we are going to try and keep some of the best players in our area at home."
Berlekamp enjoyed a decorated career as a player with the Saints. He was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Thomas More from 2010-2014, and he was a member of the all-time winningest team in school history. Berlekamp was named team captain as a senior, and led the team in assists in his freshman, junior, and senior seasons.
"Coach Berlekamp brings a fire and competitiveness with him to practice," Ray said. "I coached against him when I was at Mount St. Joseph's and he was a player here. He wasn't fun to play against so I'm excited we're on the same team."
Since graduating from Thomas More with a bachelor's degree in Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Berlekamp has spent four seasons coaching at Kings High School, where he helped lead the Knights to a conference championship, and with the AAU Cincinnati Royals.
"I am very excited to be back at Thomas More and to join coach Ray's staff," Berlekamp said. "Thomas More is a special place, and it's a privilege to once again be part of the men's basketball program."
