(GREENWOOD, Ind.) – The College Sports Communicators announced their 2023 men's tennis Academic All-District Teams Tuesday afternoon and the Saints had two athletes recognized. Senior
Sergio San Pablo (Madrid, Spain/Valdefuentes) and junior
Juan Pablo Villagrana Francisco (Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico/TEC de Monterrey) were their two honorees. Athletes from NCAA Division I, II, and III as well as the NAIA are recognized for this honor.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a sophomore both academically and athletically, participated in at least 50% of their teams' games at their listed position, been at their current institution for one full academic year, have at least a 3.50 grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale, and be a starter or important reserve. Each sport has a limited number of athletes that may be nominated, with tennis's limit being four.
San Pablo is a Business Administration major who is studying for his MBA and holds a 3.66 cumulative GPA. He was recently named Academic All Mid-South Conference for the third time in his career. Villagrana Francisco is a Business Administration major with a 3.73 cumulative GPA. He was named Academic All MSC for the second time this spring.
San Pablo went 7-12 this year in singles play and 10-8 in doubles competition. He won three of his singles matches at the No. 1 position, one at No. 2, and three in tournament play. He won seven matches in doubles action at the No. 1 spot, one at No. 3, and two in tournament play.
Villagrana Francisco was 4-8 in singles play this season and 3-11 in doubles play. He won all his singles matches in the No. 3 position and one match at each of the double's spots.
They advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, with the announcement of those teams coming out at Noon ET on May 31st.
