(MIDWAY, Ky.) – The Thomas More University wrestling team moved to 3-1 in Mid-South Conference dual action Wednesday night, with a 29-16 victory over the Midway University Eagles. They are now 7-3 overall in duals this season.
- Redshirt junior Shay Horton (Verona, Ky./Ryle) got things started with a 16-0 technical fall win at 125 pounds to give the Saints a 5-0 lead. Horton improves to 14-9 overall this season.
- First-year Dylan Cobb (Union, Ky./East Lake) got his first win of the season by forfeit at 133 pounds.
- The Saints forfeited the 141 and 149-pound weight classes to bring the score to 12-11 Midway.
- In a hard-fought match at 157 pounds, junior Logan Brown (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) came away with a 6-3 win over Daylon Stafford.
- Brown trailed 3-2 heading into the final period and started on the bottom. After a pair of stalling warnings on Stafford, Brown was awarded a point to tie the match at 3-3. He then got an escape point and a takedown to ice the match and earn three points. This was his fourth win of the season.
- Senior Ryan Draughn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) then earned an 8-6 win over Jabril Williams, his fourth of the season.
- An action-packed first period had Williams up 5-3 after a takedown and two near fall points led the way. Draughn outscored Williams 2-1 after a takedown in period two to head to the final two minutes trailing 6-5. He shut the door on the match in the third, with an escape and a takedown for the victory.
- Another exciting match ensued at 174 as sophomore Jahmon Spiller (Saginaw, Ind./Brownsburg) earned an 11-9 sudden victory over Trace Insalaco.
- After no points in the first for either wrestler, Insalaco started on bottom in the second and got a reversal before a four-point near fall gave him a 6-0 lead. Spiller hung tough though and gave himself a chance in the third with an escape and a takedown to make it 6-3. In a crazy third, Spiller started bottom and got an escape, but got taken down before another escape made it 8-5. A Spiller takedown got him to within one before an Insalaco escape gave him a 9-7 lead. Spiller got his second takedown of the period to send it to overtime where he snagged the match with a takedown for his seventh win of the season.
- Fifth-year David Gilbert (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive) won 6-2 at 184 for the second win of his season.
- He iced the match early against Ernst Lavaud, getting a takedown and reversal in the first to go up 4-2 before another reversal in the second gave him the 6-2 win.
- The Eagles won at 197, before junior Daulton Mayer (Mentor, Ky./Walton-Verona) pinned the No. 19 heavyweight in the NAIA, Byron Pierce, in just 22 seconds for his 18th win of the season and 12th fall. This gave the Saints the 29-16 win after a misconduct penalty took a team point away from Midway. This is Mayer's fifth fall this season in under a minute, and third in under 30 seconds.
