(CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.) – The Thomas More University wrestling team dropped a road dual Saturday afternoon to the No. 9 Campbellsville University Tigers, 35-7.
The Tigers won the first five weights, in the form of two decisions, a major decision, a sudden victory, and a forfeit to take a 19-0 dual lead.
At 165,
Wilder Wichman (Johnson Creek, Wis./Johnson Creek) grinded out a 3-2 victory over Gavin Smith. Smith is ranked one spot ahead of Wichman in the NAIA 165 individual rankings at No. 8. Wichman held a 3-1 lead heading into the third period where Smith chose bottom and got the escape point before Wichman was able to hold onto the one-point lead and pick up the victory. He improves to 5-2 overall this season, with this victory his first by decision.
Thomas More dropped the next three weights, which included a pair of forfeits at 184 and 197.
The heavyweight matchup was enticing as junior
Daulton Mayer (Mentor, Ky./Walton-Verona) went up against the No. 17 ranked 285 in the NAIA in Jaden Sonner. Mayer used three takedowns, an escape, and the riding time point for the 8-0 major decision victory. This made the final score 35-7 Campbellsville.
Mayer now improves to 17-3 on the season, with 13 wins in his last 15 matches. This was his second major decision win of the season, with the other also an 8-0 shutout over Indiana Tech's Cameron-Mayes Butler. This was also Mayer's fifth win this season where he shut out his opponent.
