(BEREA, Ky.) – The Thomas More College men's tennis defeated in-state rival Berea College, 6-2, today (Friday, April 21, 2017) in a non-conference match at the Wilson Evans Tennis Complex in Berea, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 13-5 and with the loss, Berea falls to 2-15.
Berea led 2-1 after doubles play as the Saints' lone point came at No. 2 doubles as the team of first-years Sheldon Preisler (San Diego, Calif./Boone County (Ky.)) and Cameron Shi (China/Scott (Ky.)) won 8-1.
In singles play, Thomas More won the five matches that were finished. Sophomore Derrick Kwok (Sugar Land, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, Shi won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, first-year Michael Kenney (Carmel, Ind./Guerin Catholic) won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3, Preisler was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4 and first-year Wesley Smith (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5. Sophomore Michael Schwarz (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) was lead 6-2, 4-3 at No. 6, but the match wasn't finished.
The Saints close out the regular season tomorrow (Saturday, April 22) when they host Washington & Jefferson College at 4:30 p.m. indoors at the Five Seasons Sports Club in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
