Thomas More Spears Bison, 8-1, in West Virginia

(BETHANY, W.Va.) – The Thomas More College women's tennis team defeated Bethany College, 8-1, today (Sunday, September 21, 2014) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at the Ewing Tennis Center in Bethany, West Virginia.

With the win the Saints improve to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Bison fall to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the PAC.

Thomas More led 3-0 after doubles play as the No. 1 tandem of freshmen Alyssa DeFiglio (West Harrison, Ind./East Central) and Julie Estridge (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) won 8-2, the No. 2 team of sophomore Anna Hetzer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and freshman Sam Zwick (Union, Ky./Ryle) won 8-1 and the No. 3 tandem of junior Paige Thoerner (Taylor Mill, Ky./Beechwood) and senior Petina Strickley (Bellevue, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) won 8-1.

In singles play, the Saints won five of the six matches.  DeFiglio won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Hetzer won at No. 2 by the score of 6-0, 6-3, Estridge won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, Zwick won at No. 5 by the score of 7-5, 6-4 and Strickley won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Saints return to action next Saturday (September 27) when it hosts Berea College at 12 p.m. at the Notre Dame Academy Courts in Park Hills, Kentucky.
