Women's Volleyball Opens Season This Weekend

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More women's volleyball team opens their season on Friday in a two-day Ohio Northern Tournament.

  • Thomas More will take on No. 19 Ohio Northern, Case Western Reserve, Bluffton, and No. 12 Carnegie Mellon in the 40th Annual Ohio Northern Tournament this weekend, August 31st and Sept. 1.
  • ONU and Case Western Reserve matches will be played on Friday, starting at 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
  • Saturday's matches against Bluffton and Carnegie Mellon will start at 10:30am and 2:30pm.
  • The tournament features six teams, will see five matches played on Friday afternoon and six contests on Saturday 

  • Six teams will be playing in the tournament this weekend: No. 19 Ohio Northern, Bluffton, No. 12 Carnegie Mellon, Case Western Reserve, Defiance, and Thomas More.

  • Thomas More is coming off a 29-6 overall and 18-0 PAC record last season, reaching the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • With only one graduating senior last season, the Saints return some of their key players, including Jenna Fessler, the team leader in assists.
  • Fessler is joined by the only other senior on the team Kasey Niesen.
  • The Saints welcomed 10 first-years for the 2018 season, along with eight returning upperclassmen.
  • The Saints are coached by John Spinney, who is in his 11th season.

  • ONU has four of their statistical leaders returning for the 2018 season, Huppers, who leads in kills and blocks, Potters, who leads in aces, Hostetler, who leads in digs, and Wade, who leads in assists.
  • Ohio Northern has won the tournament 17 times, including four of the last six tournaments.
  • The Polar Bears have won nine of the previous 14 tournaments.

  • Case Western Reserve is coming off a 19-12 season.
  • The Spartans are coached by Karen Farrell who is in her 17th season.
  • CWRU welcomes only four freshman this season and begins the 2018 season with eight upperclassmen.

  • Bluffton is coming off a 19-11 2017 season, reaching the HCAC Tournament Semifinals.
  • The Beavers welcome seven freshman, along with 11 returning upperclassmen.
  • Bluffton is coached by Steve Yarnell who is in his 13th season.

  • Carnegie Mellon went 30-5 in 2017, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Tartans welcome five freshmen, along with eight returning upperclassmen.
  • Carnegie Mellon is coached by Kim Kelly, who is in her 13th year with the Tartans.
