No. 1 Thomas More Defeats #3 Bowdoin, 81-67 to Win 2019 National Championship

(SALEM, Va.) – The top-ranked Thomas More University women's basketball team won its third national title in five years tonight (Saturday, March 17, 2019) as it defeated third-ranked Bowdoin College, 81-67, in the 2019 NCAA Division III Championship Game at the Cregger Center on the campus of Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.  Thomas More caps an undefeated season at 33-0 and the Polar Bears end the season at 31-2.

  • Thomas More jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 8:22 to play in the first quarter.
  • Bowdoin then responded with a 17-9 run to take a 19-16 lead after one quarter.
  • The Polar Bears opened the second quarter on a 5-2 run to extend the lead to 24-18 with 8:23 to play in the quarter.
  • The Saints closed out the first half on a 20-10 run to take a 38-34 lead at halftime.
  • Thomas More shot 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from the field, including 42.9 percent (three-of-seven) from behind the three-point arc.
  • The Saints had a 22-18 advantage in the paint, 16-6 off turnovers and 8-2 on second chance points in the first half.
  • Senior guard Shelby Rupp (Milan, Ind./Batesville) led the way for the Saints with 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half.
  • Junior guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) tallied 11 points.

  • Thomas More opened the second half on a 13-4 run to extend the lead to 51-38 with 5:22 in the third quarter.
  • Bowdoin closed out the third quarter on a 12-6 run to cut the lead to 57-50 after three quarters.
  • The Saints dominated the fourth quarter as they led by as many at 19 points and out-scored the Polar Bears 24-17 to post the 81-67 victory.
  • Thomas More shot 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from the field in the second half, including 50 percent (two-of-four) from behind the three point arc.
  • The Saints out-scored Bowdoin 15-8 on turnovers and 13-10 on second chance points.
  • Senior guard Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) led the team in the second half with 11 points and pulled down five rebounds.
  • Saner scored nine points in the closing half.
  • Sophomore guard Briana McNutt (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) also scored nine points.

  • Thomas More shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field in the game, including 45.5 (five-of-11) from behind the arc.
  • The Saints out-scored the Polar Bears 31-14 off turnovers and 21-12 on second chance points.
  • Thomas More out-rebounded Bowdoin, 39-31
  • Saner led the Saints in scoring with 20 points.
  • Rupp finished with a double-doubles as she had 17 points and 12 rebounds to go with four assists.
  • Temple scored 17 points, had seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
  • Junior forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) had 14 points and pulled down five rebounds.
  • McNutt finished with 11 points.
  • Temple was named the NCAA Championship's Most Outstanding Player (MOP) and Rupp was named to the Championship's All-Tournament Team.
  • Thomas More won NCAA Division III titles in 2015 and 2016, but later the NCAA vacated the 2015 title.
